Marking the 20th Anniversary of the Lord of the Rings Film Debut

I'm surprised it hasn't received a bit more attention, but this month marks the 20th anniversary of the release of the Fellowship of the Ring, the first film in Peter Jackson's adaptation of the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

As a lifelong LotR fan, the films were as faithful and comprehensive an adaptation as I could have hoped for. Though innovations in special FX technology, coupled with good old-fashioned movie magic, made it possible to believably capture the breadth of the epic story onscreen, ultimately it was Jackson's passion and his deep understanding and belief in the material—as well as down-to-earth Kiwi DIY ingenuity (and geography)—that gave the films its heart. I've watched the extended versions multiple times, usually followed by the nearly as long extras, and always feel amazed and appreciative of what was achieved.
